Marshfield was among the first Massachusetts communities to recognize the advantages of adopting the Community Preservation Act (CPA) and obtaining 100% matching funds from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to preserve open spaces and create recreation areas, restore historic landmarks and plan for affordable housing, before many of the Town’s precious resources disappeared in a booming housing market.

The CPA funds are overseen by the Committee Preservation Committee (CPC) and can only be used for specific purposes outlined in the legislation.

The CPC’s members are all volunteers and residents with a vested interest in preserving the character of Marshfield.~ Their areas of expertise include real estate development, environmental and land use law, business, investments, environmental assessments and historical preservation.~

Coordination with other governing bodies has been a priority for the CPC, whose members participate in other Town Committees and Commissions. As a result, the CPC has been involved in funding a number of initiatives identified in the Town’s Open Space Plan, Recreation Plan and Housing Plan.

CPC worked closely with Planning, Public Works, Recreation, the Open Space and Trails & Ways Committee and local preservation groups in efforts to purchase open space. To date CPA funds have purchased 66 acres of preservation land. CPA funds were also used to fund title searches and appraisals for key parcels of land believed to be critical to protecting current and future water sources. 

CPC funded efforts of local historic preservation groups to restore a number of historic landmarks which are used by residents for functions, education, research and festivals.

The funds are not meant to offset Town budget shortfalls. Further information about the Community Preservation Act and its intent can be found at www.communitypreservation.org.
